Video Marketing: Plan by Objective and Measure Views, Traffic, and Outcomes

動画マーケティングとは?目的別の活用法と効果測定のポイント

Video marketing uses video to support understanding, consideration, action, or customer assistance. Before production, decide whose question to answer, what viewers should do next, and how to evaluate the result. Large view counts alone do not establish success. The objective determines content, length, distribution, and measurement.

Use social media marketing for channel operations and video advertising formats for paid delivery. This guide focuses on the production brief and the path from viewing to useful outcomes.

Choose a primary objective and a relevant next step

Objective

Next action

Evaluation

Understanding

A concise explanation of a problem

Explore the topic or service

Relevant reach, continued viewing, questions

Consideration

Demonstration, suitability, or a case example

Read detail and compare

Outbound clicks, landing sessions, progression

Action

Explain conditions and the application process

Submit an inquiry or purchase

Verified success, quality, and cost

Customer assistance

Resolve a task

Relevant viewing, resolution, recurring questions

“Video is popular” does not define an evaluation plan. Select one primary objective and supporting indicators. Introduce the question and value, provide explanation and evidence, then show the next step. There is no universal promise that a particular opening generates results within two seconds. Connect the intended role to the AISAS framework.

Separate suggested length from platform limits

A brief introduction and a detailed demonstration require different durations. Fifteen to sixty seconds may be a creative choice, not a technical limit. YouTube describes Shorts of up to three minutes; check eligibility conditions in the official Shorts guidance. Do not transfer organic-upload limits to advertising placements or billing rules.

Adapt aspect ratio, captions, silent-viewing comprehension, and text readability to the destination. When repurposing material, check that edits preserve meaning and disclosures. Do not assume every platform preferentially distributes every video.

Define views, viewing, and clicks before comparing them

From March 31, 2025, organic YouTube Shorts views count starts and replays without a minimum watch-time requirement. The previous approach is retained through engaged views. Use consistent definitions across time, and do not equate either organic measure with eligible paid advertising views.

Not clicks or registered people

YouTube impression CTR describes eligible thumbnail impressions leading to views, not external website clicks. Consult YouTube’s impressions and watch-time explanation. Separate TrueView views, public views, and clicks using Google Ads video metric definitions.

A 50% completion rate, or a 20–40% range, is not a universal passing score. Length, audience, placement, and playback conditions differ. Investigate drop-off locations for repeated explanation, missing information, or caption problems, but keep causes as hypotheses.

A fictional example separates viewing cost from outcome cost

Consider a fictional Japan-based campaign with all costs in JPY. With 10,000 qualifying paid views under a fixed format definition and JPY 100,000 media cost, CPV is JPY 10. Public views cannot replace qualifying paid views in this calculation.

Assume 240 GA4 landing sessions from the campaign links and 12 successful sessions in the same period: the success-session rate is 5%. Adding JPY 50,000 production cost gives JPY 150,000 total cost, or JPY 12,500 per successful session. That does not mean 12 registered people or sales. Verify links, success conditions, duplication, consent, production hosts, and cross-domain transitions before interpreting outcomes.

These observations do not prove that the outcomes would not have occurred without video. Platform view-through conversions and GA4-attributed outcomes can overlap and cover different activity. Do not add them together. Record attribution windows and conversion delays; evaluate incrementality through a separately designed experiment when needed.

Definitions and unobserved activity recorded

For Japan, consult the Consumer Affairs Agency’s stealth-marketing Q&A in Japanese to assess advertiser involvement and clear overall disclosure. Other markets require separate assessment.

Embedding a video does not guarantee better search rankings. Review video-focused watch pages, discovery, and accessible video and thumbnail resources against Google’s video SEO guidance. Longer observed dwell time alone does not prove a ranking effect.

Use the review to choose the next production decision

Compare consistent periods and formats across relevant reach, understanding, next actions, qualified outcomes, and total costs. Refer to web advertising types for the distribution context and CTA design for the next step. Xtrategy can organize production and media plans, responsibilities, approvals, monthly costs, and KPIs so the next video addresses a specific unresolved question.
